Artificial Intelligence (Al) has been an emerging technology that is increasingly being utilized in the oral health setting. For example, Al technology can be used to facilitate practice management, imaging and diagnostics, treatment planning, patient care, communication, recordkeeping, and clinical care. Although Al tools are increasingly being utilized in oral health services, their impacts on the quality of patient care remain insufficiently analyzed. Legislation does not yet specifically support (nor prevent} the use of Al in health care.
Currently, a federal strategy with respect to Al use in health care is being developed and Offices of Information and Privacy Commissioners of several provinces are investigating ChatGPT with respect to concerns. As regulations and frameworks around the use of Al continue to be developed, this practice guidance will be regularly updated to reflect new information.
To ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI, practice guidance for using AI in oral healthcare settings has been developed as a collaboration between the Alberta College of Dental Hygienists, the College of Alberta Denturists, and the College of Dental Technologists of Alberta.
